Frequently asked questions

Social & Community Participation is an NDIS service designed to help you meet people with similar interests and engage in social and community activities. Being part of your community is an important aspect of life, and building social connections even more so. In order to support you to achieve your social and community access goals, this service offers support in areas such as building confidence and skills, connecting with social and community activities, and staying connected to social and community activities when going through different life stage.
Social & Community Participation is generally funded as part of your Core budget and may not always be stated. This means in most circumstances you can use your core budget flexibly to access social & community participation activities. When applying for the NDIS or during your plan review, it’s important to talk about your social and recreation goals to ensure you receive adequate funding to access this support. It may also be beneficial to have evidence from an allied health professional to help the NDIA consider the supports you need. If it is stated in your plan, you’ll likely see it under Core Supports – Assistance with Social and Community Participation or Capacity Building – Increased Social and Community Participation. Once your NDIS plan is approved, you can talk to your support coordinator or local area coordinator about appropriate services and how you can best access them.
Social & Community Participation services cover a wide range of activities. These can include a wide range of things, including but not limited to: 1. Participating in a dance class 2. Engaging in sports such as soccer 3. Getting creative in an art class 4. Learning how to play an instrument 5. Camping with your peers 6. Improving your cooking skills And more! If there’s an activity or support you’re interested in but you’re not sure you can access, make sure you reach out to your support coordinator or local area coordinator for advise and guidance.
